Why they were nominated
I met Anthony Lue two years ago through Connecting GTA. I came with my daughter, who uses a wheelchair, and Anthony was warm and welcoming to both of us. Since then we have heard him speak and attended a few of his events. After learning his story, I understand why he makes people feel they belong.
In September 2009, at 21, Anthony was seriously injured in an industrial accident and left paralyzed from the waist down. He had been a provincial-level athlete with hopes of competing at a world-class level. He chose to adapt and build new dreams. He found a new sense of autonomy through handcycling and organized fundraisers in Durham Region to pay for a properly fitted hand bike. He earned a full athletic scholarship to the University of Arizona. He graduated on the Dean’s list as a dual scholarship athlete with a degree in Rehabilitation Studies and Services.
He then decided to put his experience to work for others. He aimed for the Paralympic Games in handcycling, but he saw inequalities in adaptive sport and walked away from that goal to push for change instead. Today he is an entrepreneur, motivational speaker and accessibility consultant, building a career in accessibility. He founded The Anthony Lue Foundation, which expands access to mobility aids, adaptive technology and recreation for people with disabilities, and Anthony Lue Consulting Inc. The foundation’s first event was at the 2025 Toronto Honda Indy. He also speaks about how vehicles can better serve people with disabilities, including to a major automaker, to influence future designs.
Anthony makes inclusion real. He shows people with disabilities what is possible. He presses businesses and institutions to remove barriers, and he opens doors to recreation, technology and community. He did the same for me and my daughter. He makes people feel seen and welcome, and he turns his own experience into action for others.
