Why they were nominated

Peter Longo has never treated service as a single job. By day, he helps keep Canada’s hospitals supplied. In the evenings and on weekends, he’s at Town Hall, on community event grounds or on a soccer field. Across all of it, he brings the same instinct: show up, listen and get things done for the people who count on you.

Leading for patients across Canada

Peter is Chief Operating Officer of Mohawk Medbuy Corporation, a national, not-for-profit shared services organization that supports hundreds of Canadian hospitals and health care providers. He oversees its operations and its relationships with member hospitals and health authorities. That role builds on more than 25 years as a supply chain executive in health care and at companies such as Bell Canada, GlaxoSmithKline and LifeLabs.

His leadership was clearest when it mattered most. When COVID-19 hit in March 2020, the Ontario government seconded Peter to lead Ontario Health’s COVID-19 Supply Chain Task Force. The team sourced, clinically evaluated and distributed PPE and other medical supplies to health care workers across the province. When frontline workers needed protection, he helped make sure it reached them.

He has continued to lead with people in mind. When Mohawk Medbuy sold its Linen Services division, the sale was structured to protect jobs for its Hamilton-based employees and keep long-term service commitments to hospitals. When US tariffs threatened Canada’s health care supply chain, he championed practical steps to support “Made-in-Canada” medical products, helping member hospitals make informed decisions about domestic suppliers.

Serving his neighbours in Oakville

Peter has represented Ward 4 on Oakville Town Council since 2018. His ward includes Westoak Trails, western Glen Abbey and Palermo. He has lived in Oakville for 25 years and is raising his four children here, so his commitment to the town is personal.

As councillor, Peter makes a point of being present. He attends local events, advocates at Town Hall and stays accessible to every resident in his ward. His priorities reflect what families care about: managing growth responsibly, making sure transportation and facilities keep up with demand, and protecting green space. He also brings real expertise to those decisions. He holds a master’s in environmental studies focused on environmental and urban planning, and he has served on the Oakville Energy Task Force and the Heritage Oakville Advisory Committee. Before joining council, he chaired Halton Region’s Natural Heritage Advisory Committee.

Giving back beyond his titles

Some of Peter’s most meaningful community work has nothing to do with his job titles. Over 12 years, he coached more than 45 teams with the Oakville Soccer Club and was named Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2016. That’s hundreds of young people who learned teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship from someone who chose to spend his Saturdays with them. He has also served on the executive of Oakville Marine Search and Rescue, a volunteer organization dedicated to keeping people safe on the water.

Why Peter deserves this award

Community engagement isn’t about the size of a title. It’s about consistently choosing to serve. Peter Longo does that at every level: nationally, by keeping hospitals supplied and protecting frontline workers in a crisis; locally, by representing his neighbors on council; and personally, by coaching young people and volunteering in search and rescue. He leads with competence, cares about people and is always present. That’s exactly what this award is meant to recognize.
